Return to Tartok: Epilogue

That footprint had indeed been a sign they were getting close.  They'd broken out of the steam vents shortly after, and into what appeared to be a sprawling stand of redwoods, perhaps even an entire forest of them.  They weren't the first team to make it through, but the second or third - and Chief Thunderfeather had beaten everyone there.  The Akotas had apparently decided to tolerate Mitchell, and had extended that courtesy to the rest of them.  Though clearly nervous around so many people, they did not attack again, and instead watched carefully as everyone took turns investigating the new puppy Thunderfeather held.  It was a strange looking little thing, but it acted just like any other puppy, and soon no one seemed to care about any of the rest as it was most thoroughly spoiled and cuddled.

The pup fell asleep in Obocri's arms when it was her turn, and as she carefully laid it down by her three companions, she knew she wanted one of her own.
